Pat Gaughan: Bio

Pat Gaughan is a vocalist/guitarist who performs on the folk circuit either solo or as a duo with fiddler/mandolinist LJ Slavin and fiddler Nancy Maio. Her original material ranges from lyrical ballads to acoustic rock flavored songs. Pat plays traditional folk and blues as well as Irish songs and tunes. Pat has performed at many traditional Irish festivals, folk festivals, clubs, colleges and other venues. Her intricate guitar work compliments her rich voice.

In addition to her performance background Pat has a Masters in Music and has taught guitar as well as courses in American Music, World Music, Music Theory and Music Appreciation at McHenry County College. Her educational background compliments her performing and lends a unique perspective to the educational music programs she has created and presents.

Pat's album, "Road Less Traveled", of original material has received airplay throughout the United States on public radio stations and folk programs. Recently, Pat Gaughan was chosen to perform as part of the Great Performers of Illinois Festival. Her album, "From Erin's Shore" and her recent "Parting Glass" of Irish songs and tunes is available at and CD Baby.

Nancy Maio - Fiddler

Pat Gaughan and Nancy Maio, both accomplished musicians in their own right, have collaborated their musical talents, presenting programs of traditional Irish music, folk, and original compositions. They have performed throughout the Midwest, playing at clubs, Festivals, Colleges, and headlining Concert series. As a duo they combine Pats rich voice and intricate guitar playing with Nancy’s instrumental virtuosity on the fiddle.  Nancy is active as a violin teacher and performs with several local orchestras including the Racine Symphony, the Festival City Symphony, and the Wisconsin Philharmonic. In addition, she is sought after as an Irish Step Dance competition musician.

Together, Pat Gaughan and Nancy Maio have a warm stage presence that combined with their musical talents makes them a very memorable musical duo.


LJ Slavin - Fiddle, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle

As a duo Pat and LJ combine Pat's rich voice and intricate guitar playing with LJ’s  instrumental virtuosity on many instruments including the fiddle, mandolin, flute and Irish pennywhistle. Their Irish program ranges from favorite Irish ballads and pub songs to traditional instrumental jigs and reels. 

In the spring of 2012, he was musical director and lead musician in the world premiere Steppenwolf Theatre production of "The March." L.J.'s theatrical career has taken him to Broadway where he performed in a Tony Award winning production (Grapes of Wrath, best play, 1990), as well as Equity house theatres across the country and England. Some of the theatre companies he has worked with include Steppenwolf, Goodman, Northlight, Chicago Shakespeare, Denver Center, Virginia Stage, Goodspeed, Cincinnati Playhouse, LaJolla Playhouse, the National Theatre of London, and more.
